Gothic 2: Anniversary Edition

Version: in development -Modification type: Enhanced

Introduction

Maybe someone will remember those overly ambitious plans a few years ago. Well, things have changed since then, but I haven't given up on the idea of remaking Gothic II to my liking. And I can slowly see the end on the horizon. The goal of the Anniversary Edition, the spiritual successor to Gothic I: Definitive Edition, is multifaceted: on the one hand, the modification wants to approach the previous work and the famous sequel in terms of art style and atmosphere, without losing the tone of earned freedom that Gothic 2 set, or the (too many) noticeable compromises, and without turning the game into a total conversion-and without losing what made Gothic 2 (at least for me) special. At the same time, it's about maintaining the datadisc and continuity with Gothic 3 (and potentially, at best, CSP) and even creating a slightly better continuity with the latter. Additionally, cutscenes from Gothic 2 (be they minor dialogue and snippets of dialogue, or entire plot points) and its alpha version are included. And there's more...

English is planned for after release, originally released in German

Gameplay

  • Expanded and modified artificial intelligence: NPCs will now react to the hero's status (or even to other NPCs and monsters) and in some cases may ignore crimes or even flee; victims and witnesses of crimes will comment if you've paid for your crime, and more...

  • Added stamina and sprinting (little or no impact on the combat system)

  • Shield combat

  • Some crafting expanded and new ones added (known from the sequels)

  • Status menu expanded and reorganized (page switching)

  • Mana consumption registered instead of character values

  • Added many new weapons (and ones familiar from Gothic 1)

  • New armors (both guild and non-guild -> missing ranks completed and partially expanded)

  • Some new skills

  • New balancing (slightly harder than the original)

  • Death reports

  • Hidden locations

  • Greetings dependent on status and friendship (=> Known from Gothic 1, but less intense, with exceptions depending on character and situation)

Content

  • (Because I don't want to reveal too much, I'll be brief)

  • Main story expanded with additional details, books/scriptures, dialogues, and even quests

  • New side quests (e.g., Trokar, based on cut content)

  • New guild-specific quests with potential for conflict

  • Some new ambient characters

  • New places to explore

  • World expanded with more ambient objects and decorations

Graphic

  • The modification primarily focuses on the DX8 renderer (original/vanilla), with DX11 support planned if possible (potentially after release if necessary)

  • Khorinis will be styled after Gothic 1/the sequels, with the city itself reflecting the Gothic 2 Alpha style

  • The user interface is inspired by the sequels but will have its own unique touch
