Gothic 3: Community Story Project

Version: In Development Modification Type: Gothic 3 Enhancement

General Information

Community Story Project (CSP) is a project aimed at improving and expanding the somewhat modest parts of Gothic 3, especially its story. If you would like a better overview of the planned

changes, you can take a look at our concept.

How is the project classified?
The Community Story Project is no longer just a patch, but rather an add-in. It enhances and expands the main game based on the existing content.

How is the project funded?
The Community Story Project is not financially or otherwise supported by the creators of the game. All work is carried out voluntarily and without any claim to compensation by our members. Our infrastructure – servers, forums, website, and programs – is realized through many freely available services (freeware) and our own software.

What are the most commonly used abbreviations related to the project?
We use several abbreviations for our project and other projects related to Gothic 3:

  • CSP – Community Story Project

  • CST – Community Story Team

  • CP – Community Patch

  • CPT – Community Patch Team

  • QP – Quest Package

  • CM – Content Mod

Where can I find more information about the Community Story Project?
The first place to check is, of course, our official website. Additionally, there is a discussion thread on the World of Gothic forum (feel free to post in English – after the English section of the forum was closed, we decided to communicate bilingually), where CST members regularly answer questions. Furthermore, we have a special website where we gather all news, threads, and posts related to our project. Links and suggestions for further publications about CSP are always welcome.

Distribution and Release

What are the requirements for installing the Community Story Project?
Apart from having Gothic 3 already installed, the only requirement is the installation of the Community Patch version 1.75.14. This patch introduces new options for game modification that our project relies on, and is therefore essential. Additionally, optional texture changes slightly increase the minimum hardware requirements.

How will the Community Story Project be distributed?
The project will be delivered as a single installer file that will automatically install all necessary files. The installer will also verify whether the latest version of the Community Patch is installed.

When will the project be released?
We will release the result of our work once we feel that the project is complete and sufficiently tested. The scope of the project is massive, as our goal is to create a deep and engaging gameplay experience. Therefore, we are currently unable to provide a specific release date.

How far along is the development?
Since the development status constantly changes, it is not specifically stated in this FAQ but is regularly updated in the news section. In any case, we are unable to give an exact figure for the progress, as many tasks are carried out in parallel, depend on one another, or are completed faster or slower than initially expected. Additionally, changes to the content are still possible, making predictions even more difficult. Nevertheless, this remains a project made by fans for fans, without any commercial goals – meaning we are not forced to release an unfinished game.

Contributors and Positions

Who is involved in the Community Story Project?
This project is created entirely by fans of the Gothic series. A full list of team members will be published soon.

Can I help with the Community Story Project?
Since the CSP has been in development for several years, there are occasional changes within the team, making it difficult to precisely determine which positions are currently open. You can find an overview of available positions in the latest news or in the "Jobs" section on our official website.

How can I contribute my ideas?
We certainly welcome your ideas. However, please do not send them via email – instead, use the appropriate threads on our forum. Still, we cannot guarantee that every suggestion will be implemented. There are several reasons for this: we have a clear vision of what the final version of the game should look like, the project is already at a stage where major changes are not feasible, or it may simply not be technically possible to realize certain ideas. Nevertheless, feel free to submit your suggestions – we might incorporate them into the project. Unfortunately, we are not able to respond to every proposal, comment, or question – it would be too time-consuming. However, we do read and consider everything.

Voice Acting and Localization

Will your project include voice acting?
At the moment, we have no such plans, as we are fully focused on the core project. This means that the released version will not include voice acting. There are two main reasons for this: we lack both the time and the necessary resources. However, it is possible that a separate or entirely new team will take on this task in the future.

Will there be a translated version of the Community Story Project?
We are in contact with several international Gothic communities who have reached out to us regarding this matter. Once the German texts are completed, we will move on to this phase and send the texts to external translation teams formed by the community. At that point, we will issue an announcement and a call for volunteers to join or create these teams. Currently, we are planning translations of CSP into English, Polish, Italian, and Russian. Of course, we are also open to additional languages.

Content

How large is the scope of your project?
It is impossible to precisely quantify the scope of the project. It is not just about adding a single side quest line or a few dialogues – we are reworking the story of Gothic 3 in almost every aspect. For a rough idea, here are some numbers (as of April 2025):

  • Internal forum: 4,450 threads, 66,380 posts, 2.6 GB of data

  • NPCs: 2,593 (original) + 814 (new) – 56 (removed) = 3,351

  • Monsters: 5,053 + 828 – 98 = 5,783

  • Objects: 212,302 + 24,480 – 12,098 = 224,684

  • Vegetation: 1,112,521 (original) vs. 1,111,896 = –5,031

  • Dialogues: 12,592 (original) vs. 56,275 (CSP) = +43,683

  • Strings: 22,255 vs. 80,737 = +58,482

  • Quests: 575 vs. 966 = +391

  • Infos: 4,605 vs. 15,035 = +10,430

  • Items: 1,496 vs. 2,790 = +1,294

  • Ownerships: 1,567 vs. 3,015 = +1,448

  • Game events: 1,195 vs. 7,662 = +6,467

  • Sectors: 448 vs. 706 = +258

What exactly will change with the Community Story Project?
There will be so many and such extensive changes that it is impossible to list them all – and we also don't want to spoil the story for you. We focus primarily on five main areas, which will form a cohesive whole: the main story, guilds, city concepts, texture improvements, and weapon reworking. In addition, there will be many smaller additions and side projects – so stay tuned!

What will the main story of the Community Story Project look like?
Our goal is not to create an alternative continuation of Gothic 2, but to improve the original game by Piranha Bytes. We aim to give the content and atmosphere a much more "Gothic" feeling. Key elements of the story, such as the orc victory, the destruction of rune magic, and the search for the Fire Chalices and the artifacts of Adanos, will remain intact. However, we will give them a clearer structure, including reintroducing chapters as in the older games. We will also fill in logical gaps and unfinished plotlines, for example involving the pirates, and add exciting twists. This way, players will have more influence on the world than ever before.

Why is there so little information about the story?
It is very difficult to explain the story without revealing too much. As we get closer to release, you will learn more about the scope and content. Nevertheless, we want you to experience the game the way we intended, and therefore we will not reveal too much beforehand.

Which guilds will be part of the Community Story Project, and which ones will you be able to join?
As you are used to, you will have to choose one of three main guilds: Rebels, Orcs, and Hashishin. In addition, guilds like the Rangers, Nomads, and Northmarians will be expanded – while you won't be able to join them directly, they will offer side quests, alliances, or conflicts that can support your main guild. Moreover, it will be possible to join the Pirates, Bandits, and one additional, yet undisclosed, side guild.

What is the city concept?
In the original Gothic 3, cities often lacked life and unique character – civilian populations, especially female NPCs, were missing, which hurt immersion. Our writers have therefore created a unique concept for each settlement, including its history, civilians, and a balanced gender ratio. Hundreds of new NPCs with atmospheric dialogues and side quests will be added – sometimes even tying into the main story or guild plots. We are also creating logical connections between cities, something that was lacking in the original game. The main goal of the city concept is to make the world feel more believable and alive – not just as a backdrop. You won't just pass through cities as a chain of quests and then forget about them.

Implementation

How is it possible for you to modify the game without a mod-kit?
Modifying Gothic 3 is done mostly through manual editing of data. There are only a few community-created tools that slightly ease the work. A large part of the effort involves direct implementation and modification of the game's content by editing game code itself. This includes hexadecimal data, which we had to decipher first, scripting data (in text form), and graphical elements like textures. The official mod-kit was released only after the project had already been in development for some time – but it allows only a few basic operations and is insufficient for a large-scale project like CSP.

What can't you improve and what won't you improve?
We do not have access to the necessary data (such as the source code) to fix technical issues – nor is it our goal. Most technical problems have already been addressed by the Community Patch Team (CPT), which means Gothic 3 is now in the best technical state possible. We also do not plan to add new gameplay features like horse riding or diving.

Texture Mod

What is the Texture Mod?
The Texture Mod is part of our project. Its goal is to change Gothic 3's colorful and bright visual style into a darker version, more fitting the atmosphere of Gothic 1 and Gothic 2. Many of the original textures will be replaced with darker ones to better reflect a world torn by war and destruction. Additionally, the overall texture quality will be improved, as the new textures will have a higher resolution – something made possible today thanks to much more powerful hardware compared to 2006.

What if I don't like the Texture Mod?
During installation, you will be able to simply disable the new textures. They are not required to play CSP.

Can I already see the texture changes?
The first – now rather outdated – version of the textures was included in Quest Package 4. More recent screenshots can be found in our gallery.

Integration of Other Mods

Will mods like Quest Package 4, Content Mod, or others be part of CSP?
Quest Package 4 and its earlier versions will not be required to run the Community Story Project. Although we have permission to use content from both the Quest Package and the Content Mod, you will barely notice any elements from other modifications in the final version of CSP. Most of the quests and content will be created entirely by us from scratch, ensuring they fit seamlessly into our overall concept.
