Gothic 2 – New Record for Active Players on Steam!

When we look at the chart of active players of Gothic 2: Night of the Raven on SteamDB, we can see that the number of players has been steadily—albeit slowly—growing from the very beginning. Since December 12, 2025, however, a sharp increase can be observed, culminating in a record 2,683 concurrent players on Sunday, December 14.

The previous record was set in January 2025 and stood at 1,635 players, which is 1,048 fewer. It’s probably not hard to guess what caused this sudden surge…

Golden Gate 2: Goddess Heart

This milestone was primarily driven by the release of the second part of Golden Gate—a modification for Gothic 2: Night of the Raven. The project by the Golden Gate Team quickly climbed to the top ranks of the most popular mods.

On Steam, it currently sits at 4th place on the list of most popular mods, just behind Union, Union Advance Inventory, and D3D11 Renderer, making it effectively the most popular story-driven mod. At this point, the project has also surpassed 10,000 subscribers on the Steam Workshop.

On our home platform GOG, where the mod has One-click Mod support, it also appears in the bestseller list in the “modifications” category. This comes as no surprise, as player feedback indicates that installation on this platform is the least problematic, and many people explicitly recommend using it.

Even though we don’t have access to GOG’s statistics, it’s safe to assume that the number of players there is at least as high as on Steam.

Myrtana Chronicles: Archolos

It’s important to note that the record for active players does not apply to the entire Gothic 2, but only to the “Gothic II: Gold Classic” product on Steam. This matters because the Myrtana Chronicles are listed as a separate item on the platform, and therefore have separate statistics.

Looking at the stats for the mod that tells Marvin’s story, we see that its concurrent player record stands at 9,328 users, set on December 19, 2021. From this, we can roughly estimate the true record for all Gothic 2 players on Steam (the average number of Gothic 2 players in December 2021 was 880).

The Ever-Living Gothic

It’s easy to notice that despite its age, the Gothic series still maintains a very active community, and well-crafted modifications like Myrtana Chronicles or Golden Gate enjoy great appreciation among fans.
